DVD Transfer – Does Your VHS, 8mm, Hi8 Mini-DV Tapes Have a Shelf Life?

Vhs Articles Comments Off

A video tape degrades with time because it is made of magnetic media. What you see ten, twenty years later is nowhere as sharp as when the tapes were first created. So, what is the shelf life of a magnetic tape (which includes Betamax, VHS, 8mm and mini-DV)?

If you ask a professional or a photo studio that question, the answer you get can range anywhere between 5 to 10 years. This is because it depends a lot on how 1) you handle it, 2) how you store it and 3) how often you played and rewound it – as opposed to letting it sit for years and years. Here are some tips to extend the shelf life of your tapes:

How to Handle Your Video Tapes

o Never touch the tape itself. Hold it by the side of the cassette

o Rewind the cassette before storing it.

o Keep away from curious kids, avoid dropping or banging the tapes.

o Keep cassettes away from magnetic fields

o Don’t leave a cassette in the car where it will be exposed to heat and cold

o If using a new cassette and it’s still cold, let it warm up to room temperature first.

o Occasionally fast forward and rewind a tape that’s being stored a long time.

Where to Store Your Video Tapes

The conditions in which magnetic tape is stored and used can extend its shelf life. Observe these video storage tips:

o Store in conditions that are stable, cool and dry.

o Stay away from hot, humid and dusty.

o Store cassettes in the cassette case.

o Store your tapes vertically and not flat (see picture) to distribute the gravity pull equally and stably.

But why wait in the first place? The best transfer quality you can get is YESTERDAY. The longer you wait, the more chances you are taking about the tape magnetic media degrading Not to mention video transfer costs don’t go down, they only increase.

The video shows scenes onboard a MSA Malaysia Singapore Airlines B707 on a Boeing B707 LHR-FCO-BAH-BOM-KUL-SIN flight in first class. Also shown are Fokker F27 and B737 in full MSA livery. MSA was the predecessor of Malaysian and Singapore Airlines and renowned for it’s superior inflight service…. Eventually the airlines was divided into two in 1972. The twoletter code MS was cancelled and replace by MH and SQ. The film was shot with an old 8mm camera, transferred to VHS and now uploaded. So, sorry for the quality ! Enjoy !

The Biggest Oversight When Hanging Your Flat Screen TV On The Wall

Vhs Articles Comments Off

So you’ve saved up your money and now going to buy a flat screen TV. Perhaps you have settled on a LCD or Plasma.

I hope you didn’t spend all of your money on the TV because there a few things you may want to budget for if you are not particularly handy around the house.

Where are you going to install your Flat Screen?

If you are going to mount your TV on the wall there is something very important for you to consider

Do you have a TV outlet installed at the height you want your TV? Even if you said yes…I am sorry it will not be enough. Allow me to explain.

Can you picture where your existing TV is set up? Maybe it’s in an entertainment center. Now close your eyes and see all of those wires that connect between your Television & your satellite box, DVD player and receiver.

Why do I bring this up?

If you hang your TV on the wall with a standard TV jack installed there-

What about all of those wires that we just talked about? How do you plan on connecting all of those wires that are needed to work all of your electronic equipment?

I told you that no one thinks about this.

Unfortunately, with a single cable TV jack over the fireplace…your ONLY option is to stack your:

· Satellite receiver

· Cable TV box

· Surround sound receiver

· DVD player

All on top of your beautiful fireplace!

Or have a bunch of ugly wires draped all over the place serving as a serious tripping hazard

Can you imagine moving into a beautiful new home and seeing all of those pieces of equipment balancing on your mantel?

You would be surprised how many new homes are built this way. They install just a simple TV jack over the fireplace. The homebuilders are totally clueless. Unfortunately, its up to you, the homeowner to foot the bill to wire this correctly.

So what can we do about it?

If you want the best signal possible, Then HDMI cables are the way to go. One HDMI cable run thru the walls will do the work of all of those other wires we spoke of moments ago. To have this professionally done I would budget from $395- $595 for HDMI cables, depending on how long they need to be.

You can probably save two hundred dollars if you do this yourself.

Remember that buying the flat screen TV is just the beginning of your investment to have HD TV in your home.

DVD VHS Transfer – Digital Video Editing With a PC Or Mac

Vhs Articles Comments Off

Digital video editing takes home movies to a whole new level. Video editing allows you to delete the parts you don’t want, add music, and improve your videos with visual and audio transitions before you transfer them to DVD.

Editing takes place after you or a professional transfer house have captured the videos from tapes and transferred them to digital files on a computer drive. Video editing takes up a lot of computer disk space so be prepared. In fact, make sure your computer is up to speed – - literally. Take it to a specialist if you feel you may need to beef up your computer and need some help.

You will need a specialized editing software to edit your videos on your home computer. Microsoft Windows comes with free editing software called Microsoft Movie Maker. Macs come with iMovie editing software. If you would like to buy a software with more capabilities, take a look at these other video editing software packages. Just make sure that your computer will handle them.

Final Cut Pro is an editing software made by Apple for Macs only. Some estimate that Final Cut Pro is used by about half of the film industry’s editors.

Final Cut Express is a less expensive cut-down version of Final Cut Pro and is intended for the non-professional market. It does not have all of the bells and whistles that Final Cut Pro has for sure but can certainly give you more options for your home movies than iMovie alone.

Adobe Premiere Pro is made by Adobe Systems which is a very reputable computer software company that has been around since 1982 and specializes in graphics programs. It is available for both PCs and Macs.

Corel VideoStudio is another video editing software from another reputable company. It runs on Windows computers only.

Pinnacle Studio is the consumer version of Avid Software – - formerly the main video editing software of the film industry. It only works on Windows.

Cyberlink PowerDirector is another sophisticated software for the consumer. Here is another program that only runs on Windows machines.

After the video is edited, you’ll need a “DVD burner” to record your edited video to DVD. Many computers have a DVD burner built in. If your computer doesn’t, you’ll need to purchase an external one. In addition to the DVD burner itself, you will need DVD burner software to use the burner device. (By the way, DVD-R is the recommended DVD format for burning videos.) When you go to burn your video files to DVD, your software should give you some choices for on-screen DVD menus. This will let you break your DVD into “chapters” and show “thumbnails” (small images) of the chapters onscreen so you can move quickly from scene to scene. The degree to which you can control this process varies from software to software.

If any of this sounds difficult, just consult with your local computer shop. Chances are that you will need to purchase something from him or her along the way to accomplish your vision of transferring your family memories to DVD. Good luck!

Why People Choose High Definition Television Sets?

Vhs Articles Comments Off

Some people may be asking themselves what is the fuzz with HDTVs. First of all, high definition television sets provide an images quality otherwise unachievable with standard definition television sets. Images that captivate the eyes of those that have the opportunity to stand in front of one of these gadgets, even for a very short amount of time. It is fairly easy to become mesmerized with the level of detail offered by these contraptions, eventually becoming addicted to the bright colors and smoothness that high definition television sets project in just a few minutes. Their wide screen aspect ratio offer a huge panoramic span that mimics the wide screen format that is typical of movie theaters, so you don’t miss any of the action or any of the fun. But the wonders of HDTV do not end there, high definition television sets come equipped with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound capabilities, further enhancing the superior HDTV experience by providing realistic three dimensional soundscapes impossible to recreate with regular stereo sound or even simulated surround sound settings. Of course, provided that a 5.1 Dolby Digital set of speakers are used and properly configured in your home theater environment.

One of the factors that concerned consumers in the early years of high-def was the extremely high price of these television sets, today the story is different. Thanks to technology advances, HDTVs are far more affordable than they were in the past. What used to be a luxury, a technology that was only on the reach of those that had thousands to spend on a television set is now on the reach of millions of people. As of now HDTV sets can vary in price from a few hundred dollars to a thousands depending on model, screen size, resolutions offered and screen type. There are thousands of models out there, one for every budget and one for every home.

If you are a movie fan, a gamer of just someone that loves television then HDTV is something to consider.
